Wisconsin Institutional Design Award 2004: MSOE Kern Center The Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE) founded in 1903 decided to celebrate its 100-year anniversary in remarkable fashion. In April of 2003 ground breaking began on the Kern Center a 31 million dollar, 210,000 square foot recreation facility. The building, which is located at 1245 N. Broadway, has added an inspiring and unique design to the landscape of downtown Milwaukee.

"One of the most difficult challenges of the project was forming the elliptical shape of the building using glass and concrete on all floors and taking those dissimilar materials and making them correspond" stated Will Wright project manager from Hunzinger Construction.

In order to accomplish this concrete mixes ranging from 3000, 4000, 4500, and 5000 psi were placed to give structural strength and maintain its unique design. As the project evolved nearly 500 Cy of footings were poured along with 11,500 Cy of walls, columns, slabs, and a variety of other mixes. In total nearly 12,000 Cy of concrete were poured at the Kern Center.

On Oct 30th 2004 the Milwaukee School of Engineering unveiled its new facility to students and public alike. Through hard work, achieved deadlines, and cooperation; MSOE and the city of Milwaukee have a structure they can be proud of.

Wisconsin Parking Lots: Department of Public Works

When the Harley Davidson Corporation decided to build a new museum in the City of Milwaukee an extensive search was performed for the ideal location. Once that search was completed and the property located it seemed the perfect fit. The only problem with the site was an existing building, which was an aging Department of Public Works facility.

Recognizing the need to upgrade its facility and accommodate Harley Davidson the city decided to sell the property and rebuild. Because of constant traffic from city vehicles and heavy equipment a durable long lasting surface was needed. The decision to use concrete was easy. In addition to its durable benefits concrete can also reduce toxic run off and provide a cooler surface in summer months thus reducing “heat island” effects.

To support the large parking lot it was essential to use the proper concrete mix for structural support. The selected mix was the City “C” a straight 6-bag mix that was slightly tweaked with 2 stone to add additional strength. When paving the facility massive strip pours were laid out often exceeding 800 Cy per day. In total over 7,000 Cy of concrete were poured in a little over two weeks time.

With the completion of the massive parking lot the Department of Public Works has a facility that can finally accommodate all their equipment and stand the test of time.
